This Week’s Fascinating Science

Dear Reader,

We know that dinosaurs are an important part of Earth’s past, but did you know that they also may have impacted the future of humans? Dinosaurs may have had some influence on our lifespans. Aging has long been at the forefront of our minds. How do we slow down aging? What skincare products make us look younger? Which foods make us feel younger? And so on. Though many of us may try our best to retain what we can of our youth, age will inevitably catch up with us. And while we may think the main culprit of aging is time, a new study reveals that dinosaurs may be the reason for our aging and longevity.

About 225 million years ago, our first mammalian ancestors lived among the dinosaurs. While most dinosaurs were very large, these prehistoric mammals were about the size of a shrew, making them the perfect snack for dinosaurs and other larger prehistoric animals. Researchers analyzed why and how dinosaurs led to mammals living shooter lives — compared to reptiles like turtles — and the answer may lie in their teeth.
