On this day in 1914, what would have been Abraham Lincoln’s 105th birthday, construction began on the Lincoln Memorial. Sculptor Daniel Chester French used plaster casts of Abraham Lincoln’s hands and face as a model for the statue of Lincoln inside the monument.
