On this day in 1871, the Great Chicago Fire broke out in the barn of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary. Although many blamed a cow belonging to the O’Learys for kicking over a lantern, the animal and its owner were officially exonerated by the Chicago City Council in 1997.

There one moment, and gone the next. A late autumn storm drops fresh snow on the peaks of Glacier National Park, as well as almost completely concealing them behind thick clouds. After noticing this mountain briefly poke out of the mist and then vanish, I prepared my camera and waited for it to present itself again.
